Fatal Politics

After having spent a fortune in the recent destabilization campaign against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo it must now be quite obvious that the opalescent opposition really won’t stop just now despite her neutralizing Sona victory. That the next 5 months will indeed be hell for her as predicted by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago is a distinct possibility which PGMA must prepare for, as the Opposition launches its End Game stratagems against her with everything from fake polls to fake witnesses insidiously designed to ‘try’ her by publicity in a concerted effort, perhaps, to be able to regain the initiative and get People Power heated up once more!
On top of their malevolent lust for erratic power, what these wise guys fail to realize is that they will not only be bringing down a President but also our country’s ECONOMY at the very same time! Foreign investments have terribly lagged behind ‘with only $170M in foreign direct investments last year compared to an average $3B going to Asian countries of similar size and population’! This ‘slaughterhouse politics’ is really getting out of hand to the point that some crafty politicians have tried to get free media mileage by crying for the President’s blood unaware that they have been gypped into following the Pied Piper’s tune all the way to the murky ocean of hate and economic prostration!

A ‘Palm Sunday to Good Friday’ type of mentality seems to have crept upon the Filipino Psyche as vividly exemplified by our very frank Senate President Drilon! People who voted for PGMA for fear of having a dense movie actor in The Palace have, all of a sudden, made a 180 degree turn and are now intent on installing his similarly endowed, though a bit wiser and demure widow, in the Presidential seat of power, all because of an illegally obtained and inconclusive phone conversation and a string of sensationalized confessions from witnesses who anyone would think twice about bringing home to mama!

Despite all these though, a ray of hope has managed to peep through the glum horizon. The intervention of cooler heads like former Pres. Fidel V. Ramos, who, I will venture to predict, could be the most ideal ‘benevolent dictator’ that this downtrodden and unbridled country needs, once he runs for and wins the Prime Ministership, should we indeed shift to a Parliamentary form of government, has saved the day for PGMA. The C.B.C.P’s desire to have the rule of law prevail has all the more reinforced the President’s stand against the blitzkrieg attack of her detractors, who have been intending to prop-up their own man in Malacanang despite the Constitutional Rule of Succession!

Some local government officials who have been at loggerheads with each other have maintained their poise and have also gone against PGMA even if they see the senselessness of their stand, for the childish reason that the other guy has been rooting for her! Talk about Unity! Sosmaryosep! When will we ever learn and grow up?

Look, everybody has been shouting shibboleths approximating: ‘united we stand divided we fall’ but when it comes to burying ‘political hatchets’ some guys still insist on aiming them at the other guy’s back! It really seems like we will have to remain as divided as the Islands that separate us! Thus the need for a Lee Kuan Yew type of guy who can fast-track our recovery given the present depressing anarchical set-up: senior statesman who is more respected than he is feared, a man who sticks to his Principles more than his Principals, a leader who is more of a man than a back-slapping forked-tongued politician. Must I say more?
