Impeach
her, fast
Nothing, it seems, can make President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
budge despite the mounting clamor for her immediate resignation –
not the serious allegations of electoral fraud, violation of
Constitution, betrayal of public trust, and other misdemeanors
being hurled against her and her family; not the dwindling public
and business confidence in her leadership; not even the imminent
collapse of the country’s economy and further sufferings of the
people, particularly the poor.
The president would rather have herself “impeached” than step
down. Let it be. That’s her right as anyone else’: to
claim innocence unless proven otherwise. And, among other options
available, sealing the president’s fate through constitutional
means, and non-violent at that, is undoubtedly far better than
allowing the will or might of some “mobs” to prevail.
But let’s make the impeachment process start soon and move fast.
Let it bring out the truth and mete out the toughest punishment
possible to the guilty. And while at this, our people should stay
calm albeit remaining vigilant over the possibility of the whole
proceedings being turned into a mere “political circus” by an
impeachment court supposedly made up of politicians generally
perceived to have mastered the art of posturing or self
aggrandizement at the expense of truth and justice. Meanwhile, our
so-called leaders (and people) have to get their acts together and
finally help this nation at least limp its way to a better
tomorrow.
Until then we can never restore decency and pride in ourselves as
a people.
