Unsolicited advice

WHAT’S the use of a Truth Commission on the rancorous Gloriagate
tape? Another circus in the already nauseating and toxic world of
Philippine politics? What do we gain? The media will be having a
heyday drawing different angles from the proceedings, and outside
of it, if that happens.
For everyone to know, “truth” is the last thing that our baffled
nation, or more precisely, our government leaders and our
government instrumentalities, have. The lack of it is the prime
reason why we are in shackles longing to be free.
Why beat around the bush when the President can follow a more
pragmatic course if she doesn’t want to resign yet and still save
her butt and this country. Here are the things she should do,
pronto:
• Call for a constitutional change, the full ratification of which
shall also be the end of her term.
• Define her priorities, or to-do list, curbing of corruption on
top of them, and forcefully implement them while the
constitutional convention or assembly, whichever, is in progress.
• Fire all her Cabinet secretaries and replace them with people of
competence and integrity; no political accommodation this time.
• Review the organizational chain of the military and police
command and put in qualified officers; there are many junior
officers who are untainted and whose ideals are still fresh in
their hearts and minds.
• Suspend all governors and local chief executives who have been
implicated in the much-vaunted “jueteng-gate scandal.” Surely, the
DILG has the power and the wherewithal to crack the whip on those
local officials whose integrity is being questioned.
• Put her husband and son Mikey on extended vacation until a new
government has been in place, or better yet, ask Congressman Mikey
to forthwith resign from his post to send the message that she is
serious about change and moral transformation in the current
political landscape.
• Axe all her so-called presidential advisers in regions and
provinces. They are all inutile. Their presence and stupidities
only expose the bad side of the presidency. Besides, it is
presumed that there is no jueteng operation to be “watched over”
anymore that there will be no need for “bagmen” on government
payroll.
• Her loyalty to her political party should stop where her loyalty
to the people begins. She should be the president of all political
parties in particular, and all the Filipino people in general.
• Pursue tax collection to the hilt. And economic saboteurs, too.
• Look closely at the priority needs of the country’s most
depressed regions or provinces. Progressive provinces or regions
such as Cebu, Pampanga, Southern Tagalog, and Baguio have more
than enough of their fill. She should stop from shuttling these
pampered, nay vote-rich, places for she should realize that she
isn’t on the campaign stump anymore. Why couldn’t she accept the
fact that the president is only good for one term?
If Madam President would please heed the above wish list, then we
may concede to stop asking for her neck, for the sake of a
bleeding nation.
