SCAVENGERS. Mang Alfred and his wife Ningning gather usable
and salable items from discarded materials and garbage of
commercial establishments and households in Naga City. The couple,
together with their two sons ages 3 & 7, hit the streets after
they were refused entry to the Balatas Dumpsite after the City’s
Material Recovery Facility (MRF) started its operation more than a
year ago. They claimed, only accredited scavengers were allowed in
the city dumpsite. After scraping the city garbage, the family
earned an average of 150 pesos a day, which were spent mostly on
food. Daily scavenging is what tide over these poor family in
their wretched condition. JOEY CO
