> Year of the Dog

Chances of a clear and clean resolution of the explosive issues of 2005 now seem distant and dim as the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines has repeated its call to pursue the TRUTH behind the Garci Illegal Wiretapping Controversy, among other things. As if the Impeachment move by the polarized Opposition vs. La Presidenta Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was not enough, these men of the Cloth seem to have decided that everyone should continue pursuing the Truth wherever it takes them, maybe, even six feet below!

Well, of course, I personally have nothing against trying to pin down the Truth, no matter how ugly, and no matter who gets hurt, but starting the year on this note gives the impression that these Bishops are not yet contented with a cessation of all the street demos and are even INDIRECTLY asking the Majority to continue to agitate for the Truth! Sosmaryosep! Have they not seen all those almost tragic and near fatal street demos of the past? How will they rationalize the unexpected lives that might be sacrificed in their recommendation to dig farther for the Truth? Even if they put in the “through legal means” clause, the Leftists and all the other Opposition sectors will see a window of opportunity to launch another round of traffic-stopping and maybe even violent street rallies which just might end up in a bloody, senseless, Rainbow Coup!

Indeed, the Year of the Dog promises to be a colorful one! A Rainbow Coup just could be what will happen, given the various sectors hankering for P.G.M.A.’s hot seat! Ramos and Cory, Lacson and Estrada, Honasan and the ‘Magdalos’, the legitimate Opposition and the Poe supporters, just might find themselves in the middle of a free-for-all for the right to stay in Malacanang! So there could really be a series of Coups until the last man or woman standing is able to enter the Palace, unopposed! Don’t believe in the oft peddled crap about a civilian-military Junta. The Military guys, who have the guns, will ultimately ease out or eliminate all these politicos who have been the bane of the nation in the very first place!

The C.B.C.P. will, of course, try to see to it that a Military Dictatorship doesn’t take place, but it will really be the people who hold the guns who will have the last say, and woe to them who think that they will still be as free as the Rev. Oscar Cruz to criticize the Dictatorship once it has gained a foothold on the Palace! So these Bishops just don’t know that they just might’ve opened Pandora’s Tinder Box and set the time bomb ticking once more! Sosmaryosep! The year indeed promises to be a colorful one with BLOOD RED as the predominant color!

Come to think of it, where was the C.B.C.P. when the Conjugal Dictators run roughshod over the land for almost 2 decades? Several rigged elections went by with not even a whimper from them! Madre mia! Now they tell us to ‘relentlessly pursue the Truth’, sounding more and more like the Pharisees of old! Give me a break! As Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable quote in “A Few Good Men” goes: “you want to know the Truth? But you can’t handle the Truth!” How’s that for a brutally frank retort?

So there you have it. We have a politically zealous C.B.C.P. that has appointed itself Arbiter of the Truth in and outside of the government. It has such good intentions, no doubt, but it has failed miserably to broaden its horizons and foresee the negative possibilities and effects that their Pastoral Letter would have on the easily swayed Majority, and consequently, on our just revving-up Economy! Por Dios y por Santo! The good, old, Bishops should’ve just let sleeping Dogs lie, rather than wag the Dog and let it bite its own tail! After stating that the search for the Truth in the allegations of electoral fraud be pursued, it ambivalently concludes that P.G.M.A. is “trying her best to regain her credibility, but she needs to do more”, like, perhaps, jump from the frying pan, into the fire? I really won’t be surprised if things really grow from bad to worse PARTLY because of this C.B.C.P. statement! Furthermore, if damage control is foolhardily ignored, 2006 could long be remembered as the year when we shall have all gone to the Dogs! Kung Hei Fat Choi!!!
