ADMINISTRATOR Cecilia Gloria J. Soriano of the Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA) addresses the members of the Regional Agriculture & Fishery Council (RAFC) -Bicol on January 24, 2006 at the Department of Agriculture RFU 5 Compound, Pili, Camarines Sur. She stressed that abaca is synonymous to Bicol due to the superior abaca fiber and world famous abaca handicrafts and products produced by the Bicolanos. Despite the high incidents of mosaic and bunchy top diseases prevalent in the region, Bicol has an average annual production of 20,000 metric tons of abaca fiber produced from 42,913 hectares of land planted to abaca. At present, the Philippines produced an average of 66,600 metric tons and exports some $73 million or about Php 4 billion worth of abaca fibers and products to the US, UK, Germany, Japan, China, and other countries. HARANA FESTIVAL 2006 – This Chorale Group of the LGU of Bula, Cam. Sur rendered an intermission number midnight of Valentine Celebration held at the covered court of Bula, Cam. Sur, right after their arrival from San Jose (Partido) Cam. Sur venue of the 2006 Valentine HARANA FESTIVAL. Bula – LGU Chorale Group got the 1st place out of 10 competing municipalities with an award of P30,000; Baao – 2nd placer, P20,000; and Goa – 3rd placer, P10,000. Alex Bustamante

FEARING that Rapu-Rapu, Albay can become a ghost town like Larap and Paracale in Camarines Norte of which the vast reserves of minerals were completely drained off by foreign mining companies, protesters numbering about 1,000 converged at the Albay provincial capitol last February 13 calling for the closure of Lafayette, the Australian mining firm assailed by residents for the cyanide spill that causes fish kill in Albay gulf and surfacing of diseases reaching coastal Sorsogon municipalities.

"FROM THE HEART," a post valentine community outreach project of the Universidad de Sta. Isabel student organization, Teatro de Sta. Luisa, (top picture) showcased the students' talents in acting, dancing, singing. The mini play, staged at the USI Auditorium February 18, 2006, was a free-admission variety show for a cause with children from Bgy. Balatas, one of the University's adopted barangays as special guests (middle & bottom pictures). On top of the cultural exposure the show provided the children, they also received special tokens and gifts and got a glimpse of one of the many facets of USI university life.
