> Once and
for all
So once again they tried, and they failed, miserably! For heaven’s
sake! When will these power hungry politicos ever learn that
People Power is now a worn-out shoe being fitted on the wrong
foot! The Military Establishment has become an ogre ready to
pounce on the hapless government, IF and WHEN it finds the right
charismatic leader who the people can trust to bring them out of
this deepening mire of Economic Despondency. Fortunately, none has
yet been found! The Generals worth their salt are now ‘warmly
embraced’ by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and only the one or
two starred ones have yet to be promised promotions, while the
Colonels, and lower ranking officers await their turn to be patted
on the back.
In the almost 2 decade ‘Reign of Terror’ of the Conjugal Dictators
the Military became an overfed and spoiled Guard Dog whose bark
was enough to make everyone pee or shit in their pants! Having
been used to the loose leash of Marshal Rule, these guys in
uniform might now be hankering for a return to those glory days
when they were feared and always got what they wanted. If our
politicians think that they can place the Military on a tight
leash thru the establishment of a Civilian-Military Junta, they
will be terribly mistaken! No one, not even Marcos was able to
discipline the Military. Proof of this flaw were the many abuses
committed by the men in uniform then, which eventually led up to
the Aquino-Galman assassinations, and the Conjugal Dictator’s
subsequent downfall! As always the Gun will always be mightier
than the politician’s Pen or wagging Tongue!
The expected and much ballyhooed EDSA Anniversary Coup turned out
to be a resounding DUD! Can you believe a coup preceded by an
announcement of a ‘withdrawal of support?’ Mama mia! Pity that
General who tried to agitate and rouse his men to start the Coup
but who suddenly found himself surrounded by Government forces
instead! Pity that Marine Colonel who tried to revive the Coup by
using that flimsy excuse of his Superior General’s sudden relief!
Pity those politicians who went to Camp Aguinaldo trying to see if
they could enlist the Military’s support for a spontaneous People
Power 3, but who ended up going home like washed up gamblers who
just lost their pants! Pity a former heroine President who now
seems lost in a series of shallow friendships and tactical
alliances with former ‘enemies’ who caused her husband’s ‘fall’
and also tried to topple her! Pity that former President who is
being duped into believing that he can still reclaim the
Presidency thru extrajudicial means like funding street rallies
and failed coups, despite the yawning possibility of being
convicted for Plunder! Pity the dearly divided Opposition that
keeps on acting up like spoiled orphans trying to claim first-born
privileges in a polarized group trying but failing miserably to
look like one big happy family! And finally, pity this poor but
dearly beloved country for being known as the rally and coup
capital of Asia, and being branded ‘Las Islas de Ladrones’ (Isles
of Thieves) and being made to live up to it by its politicians,
drug and gambling lords, and even some ‘praise the Lords’ who have
found Religion to be one of the best, if not the best, sources of
income, this side of God’s Kingdom!
So if ever someone out there believes He can still launch a
SUCCESSFUL coup, well, he can put up or shut up, put his gun where
his mouth is and pull the trigger once and for all! But please,
please, spare me of all these People Power and Coup crap, and
let’s all get down to the nitty-gritty of trying to eke out a
descent living!
