History repeats itself
“THERE was a clear and present danger, that’s why Proclamation
1017 was declared”, that’s how Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye,
defended the government. If this is the way to measure curtailment
of freedom, the way to keep unpopular government in power, then
watch out for Proclamation, 1018, 1019, 1020, etc…
Now that the danger is no longer clear, Proclamation 1017 is now
part of the past, but Filipinos will be talking about it ad
infinitum et ad nauseum. When the talking gets heated, the
government will now say, the danger is clear and it’s time to
proclaim 1018.
If you look at the history of the Philippines, Filipinos had
colonizers, stunted revolution, crony Americanism, martial law,
and EDSA street democracy movements. Now get ready for a series of
proclamations.
History really repeats itself, only in different form.
What I really like to hear is that when over 76 million Filipinos
proclaim in unison: I shall not do this again. Enough is enough.
That is more in keeping with the Lent season.
