Sad over LP squabble
I AM sad that the oldest political party in the Philippines is in
trouble at this time with the wrangling of the groups of Senate
President Franklin Drilon and Manila Mayor Jose Lito Atienza Jr.
While Mayor Atienza has the support of the grassroots Liberal,
Senate President Drilon has the backing of LP bigwigs.
Historically, Atienza belongs to the old Liberals. He is the
nephew of the late Manila Congressman Herminigildo Atienza and the
son of the late Jose Pepe Atienza, Jr., an old timer in the
Liberal Party. While Senate President Drilon and his family has
never been identified with any political party in the 1950’s,
1960’s, until he became a cabinet member during the incumbency of
forme President Corazon C. Aquino.
Despite the support of former Senator Wigberto Tanada, Northern
Samar Gov. Raul Daza, and former Education Secretary and former
Bataan Rep.Florencio Abad, Atienza has the support not only
Metro-Manila Liberal Party Members but other members from the
provinces. In other words, Atienza has the upper hand over Drilon.
Manila Mayor Atienza is a loyal Liberal Party while Senate
President Drilon’s standing in the Liberal Party is questionable.
