DPWH completes longest bridge in Bicol

BATO Bridge which is a very important component of Catanduanes circumferential road network has finally been completed.

Costing P87.87 Million, the bridge and its approaches have a total length of 778 linear meters. “This structure is really vital because this connects the roads leading to three municipalities in the eastern part of the province, namely: Bato, Baras and Gigmoto,” Regional Director Orlando B. Roces of the Department of Public Works and Highways said during its formal inauguration late last month.

Construction of the bridge started in 2003 and was originally targeted to be completed in March 2006 but was moved to April 2006 due to a series of typhoons that hit the province of Catanduanes, as requested by the private contractor, GCI Construction.

Roces explained the whole structure provides a reliable road that could withstand the effects of natural calamities such as typhoons that frequently hit the province.

The completed bridge would also serve as an alternate road from Virac to Viga and vice versa,” Roces explained.
