MNSC, Pacol, Naga City – Naga City Mayor Jesse M. Robredo bared that the city government will focus on three sports events in training youngsters and produce quality athletes for global competition.
In a press conference held last Saturday with Department of Education Undersecretary Fe A. Hidalgo and Philippine Sports Commission Chaiman William Ramirez, Robredo said aside from swimming, they would focus on gymnastics and wushu.
Palarong pambansa, the premier students sports spectacle in the country, is the springboard of all bests athletes in the country competing in international athletic competitions. “This (Palaro) is not only a logistic exercise but an activity of the students”, Robredo added.
Naga City has produced good swimmers like Bennie Brydon Sy Jr., Gabriel Gerartd Bordado, Gerard Lorenz Dee and John Bryle Zapanta who all represented the country in the recent 25th Southeast Asian Games in
Manila. Sy won bronze medal in the said competition.
The quartet also participated in numerous international competitions in the past bringing glory and honor to Naga City, and the country in general. On the other hand, Robredo noted the number of potentials in gymnastics in the Camarines Sur National High Schools’ latest sports curriculum that may be excel nationally.
Meanwhile, National Wushu association chair Julian Camacho has promised the mayor in training athletes in the said event. “Dahil konti pa lang ang nagkaka interes sa wushu, ang possibility na makakuha tayo ng medalya dito ay malaki,” Robredo stressed. Robredo also had the backing of Chairman Ramirez while the local government has assured to support the Philippine National Games (PNG) and the colleges meets.
