GMA allies dominate Bicol House race

LEGAZPI CITY – With three of Bicol’s seasoned political heavyweights losing their re-election bids, pro-administration congressional allies remain to dominate the region’s political landscape.

The three seasoned politicians who suffered defeat in the polls were Rep. Carlos Imperial of Albay, Rep. Emilio Espinosa of Masbate, and Catanduanes Gov. Leandro Verceles.

Except for two of the 14 congressional district seats in Bicol, all the posts went to allies identified with Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi), and the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) have four winners each; Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats has three; and the Nacionalista Party has one.

The United Opposition, on the other hand, won two seats.

Kampi came very strong in Camarines Sur with three seats won, led by 2nd district Congressman Luis R. Villafuerte, Kampi president, along with Rep. Felix Alfelor of the 4th district and presidential son Dato Arroyo of the 1st district.

Rep. Noli Fuentebella of the NPC was re-elected in Camarines Sur’s third district.

Narciso Bravo (Kampi) won the congressional race in the 1st district of Masbate. Outgoing Masbate Gov. Antonio Kho (Lakas-CMD) grabbed the congressional seat for the 2nd district of Masbate while re-electionist Rizalina Seachon Lanete took the 3rd district of the island province for the NPC.

The other winner from the NPC is Joseph Santiago of the lone district of Catanduanes and newcomer Reno Gutlay Lim of the 3rd district of Albay.

The other Lakas-CMD winners are Rep. Edcel Lagman of the 1st district of Albay and Jose Solis of Sorsogon.

The lone NP winner is three-term governor of Albay and former Ambassador to Lebanon Al Francis Bichara who dislodged Rep. Carlos Imperial from his lofty perch.

Governor-elect Joey Salceda of Albay ran as an independent but is closely identified with the administration having been GMA’s former presidential chief of staff.

The two United Opposition winners are former BIR Commissioner Liwayway Vinzons-Chato of the lone district of Camarines Norte and former Agriculture Secretary Salvador Escudero III of the 1st congressional district. The elder Escudero is the father of leading senatorial candidate Chiz Escudero of Genuine Opposition.
