Kabataan members tortured, murdered

VINZONS, Camarines Norte — Two members of the local Kabataan Part-list, believed to have been tortured, were found dead between the barangays of Mataqui and Catabaguangan in the town of Capalonga, this province.

        Based on the press release of KARAPATAN-Camarines Norte given to the Bicol Mail, it was learned that the victims were Roberto Bagasbas, 27 years old, fisherman, resident of Sitio Ulipanan, Barangay Dahican, Jose Panganiban town and Ronilo Brezuela of Barangay Old, Capalonga.

        It was suspected that the victims while on their way to bring food to poll watchers were kidnapped on May 15, 2007.

        The next day, their lifeless bodies were found with stab and gunshot wounds, broken skulls, and multiple contusions.

        According to police spot report from Camp Wenceslao Q. Vinson, Sr., PNP provincial Headquarters, it was stated that on May 16, about 7:00 a.m. there was an encounter between the NPA and the Philippine Army somewhere in Sitio Palaspas, Barangay Mataque-Capalonga that caused the death of Bagasbas and Brezuela.

        The groups of KARAPATAN and Kabatan Party-List strongly belied the reports of the police that their two members belong to the NPA.

        As a press time, a human rights group was investigating the killing.
