Houseboy kills soldier

VINZONS, Camarines Norte -- A sleeping soldier met his death after he was struck four times on the head with a crowbar by his houseboy at Purok l, Barangay Manlucugan, here, in the early morning of September 27. Col. Edwin San Juan, who was a member of the 42nd Infantry Batallion, 9th Infantry Division, Philippine army based at Barangay Mananao, Tinambac, Camarines Sur, died with a crushed skull.

The suspect, Melchor Gupo, 20 years old, single, and a native of Barangay Malamig, Oriental Mindoro, a helper of the victim for a year, voluntarily surrendered to P/Insp. Victor Abarca, Vinzons’ chief of police.

Investigation showed, it was around l o’clock in the morning when the bloodied body of San Juan was discovered. He was brought to the hospital but was declared dead-on-arrival.

In an interview with the suspect, the Bicol Mail learned that he had a misunderstanding with the soldier who, while drinking liquor with a group, threatened to shoot him.

Afterwards, Gupo and San Juan returned home. The latter easily slept due to his drunkenness giving Gupo the chance to strike his boss.

Gupo said, “I don’t know why I killed my boss. There was a bad spirit that entered me. I ran absentminded and knew later I was in the place where there was the dance.”
