Probers tag Phivolcs man’s
son as suspect in Pa’s slay

IROSIN, Sorsogon -- Police authorities here filed parricide charge against one of the sons of Orlando Guardacasa, the Phivolcs employee who was shot dead more than a month ago while on his way to a birthday party.

Chief Insp. Wilson Alicuman, Irosin police chief, tagged Paul Mark Guardacasa, 18, as one of the two suspects in the killing of Orlando last August 4, 2007 at barangay Gulang-gulang here.

Alicuman said they based the charge on the letter dated May 16, 2007 supposedly written by the victim before he died and the sworn statement of Orlando’s sister alleging that a witness had confessed to her having seen the suspect at the crime scene right after the shooting incident.

The letter, which was computer printed, supposedly identified Paul Mark and Emily Guardacasa, the victim’s estranged wife, as the most likely suspects should something bad happens to the victim.

The letter also alleged that Emily was after the financial benefits that could be derived should Orlando dies.

Emily had filed concubinage charge against Orlando and the case was still in court until the victim’s death last August 4.

But Alicuman admitted that they had not yet verified whether the signature appearing on the letter, which was allegedly given to him by an informer, was indeed Orlando’s saying they were still awaiting the result of the questioned document verification process.

The police chief also admitted that the supposed eye witness who told the victim’s sister that he saw Paul Mark at the crime scene had not executed sworn affidavit that would support such allegation.

Alicuman said they were tossing it to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether the charge would stand in court.

The charge sheet had yet to be raffled off to a prosecutor who would review the case.

In an earlier interview, police investigators had tagged the New People’s Army as the likely suspect in the killing.

Informed of the development on the case, Emily expressed shock over the police action saying it was totally unfounded and outrageous.

My son was staying with his grandparents in the adjacent town of Bulusan when the incident happened, she told Media Solutions in an interview.

Although Paul harbored ill-feeling towards his father after he abandoned us but he could never bear to hurt him, my son was kind, religious and responsible, she stressed.

Emily lambasted the police for dragging his son to the case and accused the police of whitewashing the investigation.

I’ve repeatedly asked them for a progress report of the case but until now they have yet to provide me with a police report, she added.

She also denied having pecuniary interest on his husband’s death benefits saying she believed the court would decide what should be legally given to her and her children when the concubinage case is finally decided.

The only benefit that I had received so far was the P20,000 burial benefit which was not even enough to pay for the burial expenses we incurred, Emily added.

She lamented that the family was dragged into the investigation and said she was at a loss what to do as she didn’t have money to pay for the services of a lawyer.
