Gov. Salceda cup launched in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY -– A total of 21 high schools and 12 colleges and universities in Albay, both public and private, participated during the opening of Gov. Salceda’s Cup held at the Albay Astrodome last Sept. 28.

        The participating high schools and colleges or universities are: secondary – Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School (MORMS), Guinobatan; Pag-Asa National High School, L.C.; Bicol College HS, Daraga; Legazpi City Division SPED Center; Polangui Gen. Comprehensive HS;

        Aquinas University of Legazpi HS; Ago Medical and Educational Center (AMEC) Science HS, L.C.; Daraga HS; Ligao NHS; Tabaco NHS;

        Bicol University College of Education (BUCE) HS, L.C.; Divine Word College of Legazpi HS; St. Agnes Academy, L.C.; Banquerohan NHS, L.C.; St. Mary’s Academy of Ligao;

        Tanchuling HS, L.C.; San Francisco NHS; Zamora Memorial Coll. HS, BASA Computer Science-Oriented HS, L.C.; Bicol Regional Science HS; and Malabog NHS, Daraga.

        Tertiary – STI College of Legazpi; Bicol College; Bicol University of Legazpi; AMA Computer College of Legazpi; Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation, L.C.;

        Computer Communication Development Institute, L.C.; Aquinas University of Legazpi; Divine Word College of Legazpi; Ligao Community College; Onda Technological Training Center, L.C. and Immaculate Conception College of Albay (ICCA), Daraga.

        Before the opening ceremonies, the participants joined the parade from BU main campus to the Astrodome.

        Borad Member Harold Imperial, chairman, games, amusements and sports, SPA, in his opening statement said; “As spectators and participants let’s all remember that in sports, what is important is not winning the game but how you play it.”

        In his message, Gov. Joey Sarte Salceda said that the objectives of the competition are three-fold: 1) sports development of both body and mind; 2) sportsmindedness which drives away the youth from illegal activities such as drug addiction; and 3) sportsmanship which teaches value formation, promotes camaraderie and fair competition.

        Salceda also announced that President Macapagal-Arroyo will be the keynote speaker in the First National Conference on Climate Change to be held on Oct. 22 in Legazpi City.

        During the affair, three muses from the participating schools were chosen to reign during the games which will run from October to December 2007.

        Cristel Hernandez, a student of Bicol College, was crowned Miss Gov. Salceda’s Cup while Cecelia Buen Molina of Pag-Asa NHS and Helena Pauline Basmayor of AMA Computer College were crowned Miss Governor’s Cup for the secondary and tertiary level respectively. Miss Hernandez received a cash prize of P5,000 while Molina and Basmayor received P3,000 each.
