4th Red Bull Challenge USI drubs UNC

NAGA CITY --- The threesome might of Mark Reyes, Ariel Arce and John Carlo Sanchez easily powered the Universidad de Sta. Isabel Vincentians to bring erstwhile undefeated University of Nueva Caceres Greyhounds to its knees, 60-48, in last Sunday’s thriller of the second elimination round of the 4th Red Bull Challenge 2008 Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament at the Naga City Gym here.

The Greyhounds’ poor shooting in their latest battle could be underscored by the team’s ace player TJ Soriano making only a single point throughout the game, which he mustered from the free throw line.

The cage stars from the USI led the scores in all three quarters, by as much as 8 points at best, and tied at 20 points with their rival in the final quarter.

Dominating the rebounds, with blocks inflicted where they counted most, 6-feet-4 inches-tall Reyes pumped in a total of 17 points, while Arce and Sanchez contributed 11 points each to bring home the bacon.

Team standing as of last Sunday: UNC (7-1), USI (7-2), Ateneo (6-3).

Meanwhile, Tournament Director Justine Francis Barja disclosed that the champion in the Naga tournament, along with another champion team from Bicol, would be representing the region in the South Luzon elimination for the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship.

The South Luzon elimination tournament will likely be held in this city, Barcia said.
