Hail historian

Please allow me to positively react to the August 14, 2008 editorial of my favorite paper respecting the travails of a historian, or for that matter, any other person who may have the penchant for writing. The editorial was made in reaction to what I would assume as personal observations made by the editorial writer based on his past experiences which may have been discouraging and are better consigned to oblivion.

Professor Danny Gerona is a rare gem in our historically starved region and has my highest respect and admiration for his scholarship and dedication. He is my role model at my own modest attempts of putting to print, thoughts, ideas and images that I have captured on film and I do wish there would be more of his kind who could inspire us despite the indifference of some people who may have the power and resources to change such negative perceptions.

I do hope that our local leaders would have the right sense of history and a proper appreciation of local writers and historians so that in the end, by their positive example, we will all become “worthy guardians of the rich heritage in our own backyard”. Thank you.
