Public school children in the 2nd district of Camarines Sur who have interest in baseball are now undergoing training to develop their playing skills in the game.
This sports program was initiated and organized last year by Congressman Luis R. Villafuerte as part of his commitment to provide assistance to deserving school boys among his constituents.
Named as the LRV Little League Baseball Development Program, two baseball teams – Team A and Team B – were formed in each of the nine municipalities and one city in the district. Each of the total of 20 teams is composed of 12 players from the public schools in each municipality with age from 9 to 11 years old. Each player enjoys free school fees under his Blessed Program and also provided by Congressman Villafuerte with the needed baseball equipment and uniform, all free.
Another equipment he acquired for their training is one baseball fetching machine to be used alternately by the 20 teams.
The LRV baseball development program has the support of the town mayors and other leaders in the district who serve as team managers. Also taking active role in the training of the baseball teams are school principals.
Initially, the Team A and Team B in each municipality will have their own baseball game competition. Then, sometime in April or May this year, the different teams will hold the POW-WOW conference which will be the 20 teams baseball competition. The winner or the best team among them will represent their group in the regional competition, and hopefully in subsequent national and world serves.
Notably, the Calabanga team with Mayor Evelyn Yu as the team manager, Vice Mayor Rafael Palma as co-team manager is considered presently as the best tram among the 20 of the LRV Little League Baseball Development Program. That distinction was earned when the team composed of pupils of the Manguiring Elementary School, joined by four members from the team of Pili Elementary School, representing the 2nd district of the province, won as champion in the provincial meet held only the other week.
It may be recalled that when still Governor, LRV organized the baseball team he sent to participate in the USA Word Series.
