CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur -– A retired Army Master Sergeant has been added to the list of extra-judicial killings allegedly perpetrated by the communist New People’s Army after he was abducted and executed in his hometown in Sorsogon last January 18.
Master Sergeant Leonardo Dieza Gacis, 57, married, was reported to have been snatched by more less 15 armed NPA rebels in Bgy. Sulangan, Matnog, Sorsogon. He was accused by his abductors as a military intelligence operative or asset who had been recruiting fellow residents to join the Army or CAFGU.
His fellow residents and those from nearby barangays, according to the Army, have accused the NPA as bandits and barbarians and number one violator of human rights. They said the rebels’ presence have caused them fear and sleepless nights and thus would have to decide someday to support the government troopers in its mission to wipe out the armed rebels by year end.
Meanwhile, more than ten alleged members, supporters and sympathizers have turned their backs on the rebel movement and returned to the fold of the law, according to a press release by the 9thy Infantry Division of the Philippine Army based in this camp.
The surrenderees said they had to endure the harsh life in the mountains while their higher ranked cadres could afford to live in first-class condominiums, ride comfortable cars, and send their children to prestigious schools.
