Kick the miners out to boost tourism

THAT the proposed international airport will develop tourism in Albay is falsehood. How do you believe tourism will flourish when your government allows mining to continue in your province (i.e. Lafayette Mining Corp.)?

The whale shark (butanding) and other marine life are doomed (because of the mining). Can you really expect tourists to come over there without that attraction?

Why don’t you be fair and report both sides of the story? I am an Australian and visited your province recently and am ashamed to see an Australian mining company stuffing up you environment and people’s lives. Why doesn’t your government kick those miners out and look after her people?

I tried to send this letter through your link letters to the editor but can not open it.

Keep up the good work on your news stories and God Bless.

PETER KELLY,
Australia

Frankly, we can’t figure out to whom you are addressing your indignations. Our job as messengers of information is to report stories as they happen, i.e. proposed construction of the Bicol International Airport, so the people may know and think about them. As you may not have known, our paper has extensively covered reports about the controversies that attended the Lafayette mining operation, including fish kills allegedly caused by Rapu Rapu mining, and the miners’, government’s and environmentalists’ position on the issue, giving as much as possible our readers the benefit of digesting both sides of the story, as they happen, where they happen. Otherwise, opinions and views such as this one land in our opinion pages where they belong. --- Editor
