THE Rotary Club of Naga recently conducted the initial phase of Clean Water Project- Biosand Water Filters which had been made possible through a club grant from the Interact of Big Bear Lake and the efforts of Mr. Dick Shaw, coordinator of the said club.
The 10 BSWF units were installed in Barangay Batang, and Patong Pamplona, Camarines Sur, that will benefit about 30 families and provide 200 liters daily of clean potable drinking water.
The biosand water filter is a proven technology with its low cost and maintenance free filter, used in over 45 countries worldwide. The noble purpose is to provide clean potable drinking water in the countryside.
The BSWF technology was introduced in Camarines Sur last July 2007 by US Peace Corps volunteers Tom and Cara Moutsos and Noah Cohen who transferred the technology to the out of school youths in Pamplona.,Camarines Sur, under the supervision of Maricel Cuevas and Arvin Regino.
Immediate Past President Francis A. Dabu is the Chairman of the Clean Water Project of the Rotary Club of Naga.
To date there are about 250 BSWF units installed and are functioning in Camarines Sur which include the towns of Lagonoy, Sangay, Pamplona, and Libmanan. They provide accessible clean potable drinking water to about 6,000 residents.
The BSWF is a project jointly supported by the Nepean Kanata Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Temecula, Temecula Sunrise Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Makati, Rotary Club of Brighton Beach, and the Filipino Health and Education Foundation of Toronto, Canada.
