So, you think you know Naga's history, huh ? Well, at least we did until we were all proven wrong at the Naga Historical Preservation Society's first fundraising event at which during its History Trivia portion , the question was raised :
" For whom was Nueva Caceres named after ? " Guess what? We were in for a big surprise on this one. No one seemed to know the answer, except , of course, Professor Gerona , who prepared the questions for us. One of the evening's guest, Mr. King Pasilaban, took a shot at it and gave Dr. Mon Caceres for his answer . The correct answer is : FRANCISCO de SANDE .
Well, Mr. Pasilaban still won a prize for his exertions . - that is the Bicolano spirit , always trying, never gives up and for that, he earned a copy of Professor Gerona's book , " NAGA - Birth and Rebirth of a City . "
Like many of us, Mr. Pasilaban, we hope would one day become an erudite, scholar of Bicol History.
It was indeed a night of fun, history appreciation and learning at the Naga Historical Preservation Society's fundraising night. This historical hilarity sold Php. 14,700.00 in raffle tickets and was gladly matched by the society's chairperson with a total of Php. 29,400.00 raised for the evening . The grand prize winner of the Php. 10,000.00 was Mr. Dario Rey of Biggs. There were 30 other wonderful prizes given out as well.
The society's treasurer , Fabie Arejola is now arranging for the first task at hand which is to clean up the Bell tower at the San Francisco church whose overgrown Balete vines are at risk of damaging the storied landmark. Another project that the NHPS is about to unveil is the installation of the nine historical site markings throughout the City of Naga. The society's chairperson had commissioned one of Bicol's contemporary sculptor, Jose Barcena , Jr. three years ago to create them. The text to the historical markers was penned by none other than Dr. Danny Gerona. These land markers are completed and will be displayed soon pending the the NHPS 's chairperson final inspection.
As you can see, this fledgling society is already hard at work in reviving Naga's rich legacy.
Thank you to those who came and supported us at this fundraising occasion. My heartfelt thanks to the officers of the NHPS , Dr. Gerona, Fabie Arejola, Jose Fernando Obias and Councilor Nathan Sergio.
